Ethereal Connection - R. Manzin

from LifeFlight by Roberto Manzin

2. Ethereal Connections (African cross rhythm 6:4)
In 1985, when I was 19 years old, I had to serve for one year in the Army, as it was compulsory in Italy. Of course I found my way into an army Marching Band "Banda Divisione Mantova", also the "Eagle Jazz Band", a Big Band formed of conscripted young musicians, serving in Udine. Shortly before being assigned to the Udine's barracks, while I was serving in Orvieto, I got ill, and needed an urgent appendicectomy. Since my parents where living in Milan, about 5 hours driving from Orvieto, I decided not to tell them until after the operation, so that they would not rush to reach me. When I eventually called home from the hospital after the operation, my mum told me that on that same day she had heard my voice calling her several times. My father confirmed that she had turned around looking for me while queuing at the grocery shop, explaining that she had heard me calling her. That was the first time I found out about these ethereal connections, and today I still sometimes feel the urge to call some relative or good friend, only to find out that something major was just happening in their life that I did not know about; I wrote this song in 2014 thinking about this.
